An excellent trek that follows the old trade route from Phyang village over Lasermo la (5400m) to the amazing Nubra Valley, where we spend 2 days to recover, relax and take in the environs.

Nubra  is a tri-junction –  located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Diskit the capital of Nubra is about 150 km north from Leh town, the capital of Ladakh district, India. The region comprises of Nubra and Shyok valleys. Both their rivers originate from the remote and heavily glaciated peaks and valleys of the Karakoram Range.

Hundar was the capital of the erstwhile Nubra kingdom in the 17th century, and is home to the Chamba Gompa. Between Hundar and Diskit lie several kilometres of sand dunes, and (two-humped) bactrian camels graze in the neighbouring “forests” of seabuckthorn. In ancient times, this route was part of the caravan silk route. Siachen Glacier lies to the north of the valley. The Sasser Pass and the famous Karakoram Pass lie to the northwest of the valley and connect Nubra with Uyghur (Mandarin: Xinjiang). In past trade passing through the area with western China’s Xinjiang and Central Asia, for centuries caravans of wool and cloth, opium, spices, coral, turquoise, gold and indigo walk over many trails and over hazardous passes mainly between Leh and Yarkand (in China).

This trek passes along cultivated fields, streams, deep gorges along with cultural experience of this high-altitude region, meeting locals, and of visiting ancient monasteries.

DAYS 1-4

  • Day 1: Leh Airport – Leh (3500 M)

You will be met on arrival and driven through some part of the Leh to check in to the hotel, where you stay overnight.  We recommend that the rest of the day you should be resting & adjust to the altitude.

  • Day 2: Visit Leh (Sightseeing) (3500 M)

SHEY PALACE  (15 km from Leh)

The old ‘Summer Palace’ of the kings of Ladakh was built about 550 years ago by Lhachen Palgyigon, the first king of Ladakh.  It stands next to the remains of a larger construction on the east side of a hill, which runs south-east towards the Indus.  From the palace you can see over the fertile Indus plain northeast to Thikse Gompa and over the Indus to the Zanskar mountain range.  The old Shey palace has the largest golden Buddha statue in Ladakh in its gompa.  The statue is worked out of gold and gilded copper sheets, stands 12 metres high and has blue hair.  King Dalden Namgyal erected it in the middle of the 17th century.  The most important moment in the construction of such a figure is when the eyes are painted in and the statue can ‘see’.  No artist or monk would dare to look the Buddha in the eye so the pupils are painted over the artist’s shoulder, with his back to the idol.

THIKSE GOMPA  (17 km from Leh)

The 500-year-old Thikse monastery, perched on a hill high above the Indus, has the largest contingent of monks in Ladakh.  On the right of the entrance to the main courtyard a new chapel houses an enormous 15-metre-high seated Buddha figure.  About 100 yellow-cap monks belong to the gompa.  If you get there by 6.30am you can witness the daily morning prayers but there are also prayers closer to noon, preceded by long, mournful sounds from the long Tibetan horns on the roof.

HEMIS GOMPA  (45 km from Leh)

Hemis Gompa is famous far beyond the borders of Ladakh for its Festival.  This takes place every year with mask dances on the 9th to 11th day of the fifth Tibetan month.  Hemis also has a gigantic thangka, one of the largest in the world, which is only displayed to the public every 12 years at the Hemis Festival.  Hemis Gompa is the largest and one of the most important in Ladakh quite apart from its annual festival.  It was founded about 350 years ago by Stagtshang Rinchen, who was invited to Ladakh by King Singe Namgyal. Overnight at the Hotel.

  • Day 3: Day Three: Leh– Murabok (4053 M)

Today is a relaxed start. we leave Leh after an early breakfast, and drive to Phyang village (3554m) where one can visit the Phyang monastery.  We explore a typical Ladakhi village before driving further to the road head at Murabok (4053m), and camp there for the night.

  • Day 4: Leh – Phyangphu (4621 M)

We begin our trek.  We will do a short walk to reach our first camp at Phyang Phu. Today is a short walking day which gives opportunity to visit Phyang village and experience local culture from close quarters.   Phyang Phu is area where local bring livestock for grazing during summer month.

DAYS 5-8

After a leisurely breakfast, we will continue our trek moving west taking the valley westwards towards the base of Lasermo La 4700 m. This day is through one of the major routes which cross the Ladakh range.

  • Day 6: South Base Of Lasermo – North Base Via Lasermola (4800 M)

Today we start quite early in the morning as we will cross the Lasermo la Pass (5438m). The top of Lasermo pass offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, the Indus valley and the Shayok Valley. The trail from the pass towards our camp through rough moraines for an hour and a half. It is important to start early, as the ponies must cross the glacier before midday in order to avoid difficulties arising from snow and ice melting. The campsite is in a beautiful meadow which offer opportunities to explore and experience flora at high altitude.

  • Day 7: North Base – Hundar Dok (4060 M)

Today we will walk down through meadows, flowers, and rocks in some areas. Most of  the time, we will be walking along the Hundar stream. After following the stream for a while, we will pass through shepherds’ huts, where the men and women from HundarDok Village live with their Yaks, cows, goats and sheep. They could be seen collecting milk, cheese, butter, wild vegetables and fuel for the winter. If you feel adventurous, you can taste the delicious milk and cheese with Tsampa. Purchasing these is not possible in Leh. Our campsite is just above the Village of Dok Gongma (Upper Dok).

  • Day 8: Hunder Upper Dok – Skarchen (3584m)

Another beautiful day. We will pass through the villages of DokGongma, DokYokma and Wachan, which are names of different places with concentrations of scattered houses belonging to a common village known locally as HundarDok. If you are not in a hurry to get to your camp at Skarchen (a place where some of the local families go with their animals during the winter), you can spend sometime exploring the villages and share a few moments getting to know the locals.

Upon arrival check in to the tents and later visit Sumur , another pretty village on the other side of the river’; SamstalingGompa here was founded by Lama TsultimsNima and Monastic community was introduced as RezongGonpa. About 50 monks are residing at this 132 years old Monastery. The Gompa has some strict rules and regulations like not allowing women in the monastery after sunset and before sunrise, no smoking etc. Our tented camp is situated in a beautiful village called ‘Hundar’ with lot of trees. There is nothing more to see here except a small monastery and ruined fort above the village however, the site for the camp is so beautiful that it will invite you to explore the village on own.
